009
009 gauge railways are to 00 scale but run on 9 mm gauge track. This approximates to narrow gauge prototypes of 2 foot gauge which can be run or used with 00 gauge model railway equipment. The track used for 009 can be 'N' gauge track or preferably PECO narrow gauge track which has larger 'random' sleepers which simulate the practice of narrow gauge practice e.g. North Wales more accurately. Most 009 models are home built from kits or scratchbuilt. Commercial continental models are available from Eggerbahn and Bemo. I am building a Hunslet quarry loco and Hunslet Linda. They were both designed for the Ibertren cuckoo chassis. I have one for the quarry hunslet but they became unavailable when the Linda kit was obtained. This model will have a chassis built from a Golden Arrow kit. This kit replaces the Cuckoo chassis and is more realistic. My interest in 009 and narrow gauge in general, was inspired by the North Wales Dinorwic and Penrhyn slate quarries. Real slate can be used for the model buildings and scenery. LINKA models are of the correct scale and fit in very well with 009 models. |
